"Making a Favorable Impression"

In this short passage Paul confronts Peter about a certain aspect of his behavior. From Paul's perspective Peter would sometimes act differently or require different behavior from others if he was being watched by his friends from Jerusalem. I wonder how often we see this flighty type of behavior in each other, behaving a certain way when it benefits us? What tends to motivate us to behave one way with one group of people and another way with another group of people?
